Céline Burnand’s exhibition Coton Cent Fils focuses on the Swiss presence in Egypt at the beginning of the 20th century, using archive images of the Swiss colony, a community of around 1,500 people living between Cairo and Alexandria. The Swiss artist and visual anthropology researcher highlights their commercial activities around Egyptian cotton, reputed to be the best in the world.
Céline Burnand (*1987) is a multidisciplinary artist whose practice extends to drawing, film and performance. She studied visual arts at the Haute École d’Art et de Design (HEAD) in Geneva, then art history, literature and film history in Lausanne, and finally visual anthropology in Berlin. A former founding member of the RATS collective in Vevey, she has exhibited in Switzerland and abroad, notably at Photoforum in Bienne, the Kunstlerhaus Bethanien in Berlin, and La Licorera in Cali (Colombia). She was awarded the Alice Bailly Prize in 2012, as well as the Bourse des arts visuels du Canton de Vaud in 2018. Based in Cairo since 2017, she divides her time between her artistic practice, teaching and researching photographic archives.
