SPIRITS OF TIME
30.11.24 – 23.02.25

Imagine a world where Switzerland’s ancient animistic beliefs were never replaced by Christianity. A world in which the worship of nature and spirits continues to shape contemporary Swiss culture and folklore. In the exhibition Spirits of Time, Diane de Ribaupierre (1981, CH) and Yaeka Tabara (1986, JP) explore this alternative reality, in which the myths and legends of our ancestors are not confined to carnival, but remain an integral part of our daily lives.

The artefacts created by these two multidisciplinary artists from the world of film animation are inspired by the Japanese Shinto tradition. Together they have imagined a series of ritual objects, fantastic creatures and fictional nature deities that celebrate the spirits of the Swiss forests, lakes and mountains. Gathered in four three-dimensional tableaux that synthesize the spirit of a season, each piece tells of a myth, legend or forgotten ceremony.

This whimsical, poetic and colorful universe by Diane de Ribaupierre and Yaeka Tabara questions our relationship with nature and our spirituality in a playful way. The exhibition for all ages will opened during ULTRA:NOËL on November 30 and December 1 from 11am to 5pm at the Mosaic Room, Vevey. The space will be serving bowls of soba to warm up visitors!

She lives in La Tour-de-Peilz and works in Switzerland and abroad.

Yaeka Tabara (1986) was born in Fukuoka, Japan. After an exchange program in mixed media at the HEAD in Geneva, she studied at the Kyoto University of Art and Design in Japan, before specializing in contemporary art practice at the Hochschule der Künste Bern.
