Lyla Marsol

21.06 – 25.08.2024

Opening, 21.06.2024 from 18:30 – 22:00

From her initial studies in contemporary jewelry, Lyla Marsol has retained in her painting a persistent taste for the delicacy of gesture, combining sensual plays of brilliance and transparency. Executed on museum glass, her work revolves around color as much as depth of field. It is the superimposition of successive layers of material applied directly to the glass that creates perspective.

The particularity of her flat compositions lies in the inversion of the apparent motif, like a flashback in images. Each layer takes several days to dry before the next is applied. What the eye perceives on the surface of the work was painted first, with more recent layers added later. Between mastery of the unexpected and colorful accidents, the undulating mixtures spread by hand, combined with delicately projected splashes, reveal dreamlike, weightless landscapes. The pastel, acidic marbling evokes drips of ice melted in the sun, but simplicity is illusory, and her work demands an attentive eye.

Graduated from Geneva’s HEAD-Haute Ecole d’Art et de Design (2004-2009) and London’s Royal College of Art (2010-2012), Lyla Marsol (CH, 1983*) founded her own jewelry brand, Aglagla Paris, in 2021. At the same time, she has been developing an abstract pictorial practice since 2006, in a variety of formats, techniques and media. Her work can be found in private and public collections, including that of the FMAC – Fonds Municipal d’Art Contemporain de la ville de Genève. After several years spent in London and Paris, she now lives and works in Geneva.

We warmly thank our partners la Ville de Vevey, la Loterie Romande and the Leenaards Foundation for their support.
