Mosaic Room presents the emerging artist Olivia Wünsche, “Nuevo Mundo”

For centuries, representations of Europe as the epitome of racial supremacy, spiritual enlightenment, and cultural sophistication, were used to legitimize imperialistic wars against the supposed savagery, ignorance, superstition, and moral corruption embodied by the world’s indigenous peoples. Missionaries and conquistadors subjugated local populations into slavery, confiscated their lands, all the while annihilating native belief systems and cultures in the name of civilisational progress and religious salvation. Constant movement of free labor, silver, gold, rubber, cotton and spices across borders gave birth to unconstrained economic growth.

Today, this imperialist formula remains very similar. Although Europe no longer has colonies and the modern-day international commerce is less explicit than the outright slaughter and subjugation of native populations, the economic exploitation, human and environmental rights abuses are in full swing.

Olivia Wünsche graduated from ECAL in 2021. Her first solo exhibition “Nuevo Mundo” is an attempt to capture the intersection between nature and culture, mysticism and commerce, tradition and modernity, destruction and regeneration.

Opening, Saturday June 10th, from 15:00
